SMO
Social Media Optimization — making a product discoverable, shareable and talked about on social platforms. Coined in 2006 for share buttons and profile hygiene; it matters again because those platforms are now where buyers search and where assistants read.

SMO sits beside SEO rather than after it. Someone researching a purchase moves between Google, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and an assistant without consciously choosing a search engine, and much of what they find about you was written by someone else. The work is distribution, genuine participation, and the accumulation of brand mentions in the places your buyers already spend time.
Its second payoff is indirect and newer. Community threads and video transcripts are heavily represented in the sources answer engines retrieve from, so a well-argued answer in a niche forum can shape an AI response months later. That makes SMO one of the cheapest inputs to GEO — but only when the participation is real. Concealing your affiliation is stealth marketing, and communities and platforms are both built to catch it.
The trap is the word “optimization”, which invites working every surface at once. Most companies cannot staff that, and spreading thin is how a founder ends up with six mediocre channels and no evidence about any of them. Pick the platform your buyers actually use, test it long enough to decide, and accept that much of the result arrives as dark funnel — measured by asking people how they heard about you, not by tracking them.
worked example
A founder answering ten real questions a week in one subreddit, with an honest disclosure, is doing SMO. The same founder posting the same launch link to nine networks on one afternoon is doing distribution, and usually gets one afternoon of results.
