Ask the moderators before you post

Message the moderators with your draft before posting anything self-referential: a two-line modmail asking whether it fits the community’s rules. Most mods answer, many suggest a better framing, and a pre-cleared post cannot be removed as rule-breaking. The ask costs a day; a removal costs the account’s standing everywhere on the platform.

The play

For any post in a grey zone — a case study of your own product, a tool mention, a survey — modmail the subreddit first with the draft and a plain question: “Is this within the rules here?” A yes converts the mods from your biggest risk into your reviewers; a no saves the account.

How to run it

  1. Draft the post, then modmail: what you want to post, your affiliation, and “does this fit here, and if not, what would?”
  2. Wait for the answer — posting while the question is pending burns the goodwill the ask created.
  3. Post with any suggested changes, noting “cleared with the mods” only if they said that’s fine to say.
  4. Keep a per-subreddit log of rulings so the next post reuses the precedent instead of re-asking.

Watch out for

  • Accept a no as a no — arguing in modmail gets the account flagged, and mod teams talk to each other.
  • Pre-clearance covers the post you showed them, not a campaign; re-ask when the content changes.
