Demand Generation Job Description: Role, Skills & KPIs

What a demand generation role actually does — the responsibilities, skills, and KPIs of a demand generation manager, and how the job shifts from marketing manager to demand gen lead and director. Includes a sample job description to copy.

By The Marketinque TeamReviewed June 2026

A demand generation job description is easy to get wrong, because the title spans so much ground. At its core the role owns one number — pipeline — and the full-funnel system that produces it: creating interest, capturing it, and proving it turned into revenue. Everything below maps back to that.

What a demand generation manager does

A demand generation manager runs the marketing engine that turns strangers into pipeline. In practice that means owning the funnel stage by stage: attracting the right audience, capturing intent into leads, nurturing them until they are sales-ready, and handing off at activation — all built on the positioning the company stands for. The job is part strategist, part operator, part analyst: set the plan, run the channels, and read the numbers well enough to know which stage to fix next. The demand generation guide walks the discipline the role is accountable for.

Core responsibilities

  • Own the pipeline number and the plan that hits it, worked backward from a revenue target.
  • Plan and run demand creation and demand capture across content, paid, events, and partnerships.
  • Build and optimize the conversion path — landing pages, forms, free tools, and lead routing.
  • Stand up measurement and attribution, and report pipeline contribution to the business.
  • Partner with sales on lead handoff, the MQL definition, and a written SLA.
  • Manage budget and defend every channel’s spend in pipeline terms.

Skills and qualifications

  • Funnel and analytics fluency — comfortable with conversion math, CAC, and pipeline modeling.
  • Channel breadth — hands-on across SEO, paid search and social, email, and lifecycle.
  • Marketing-ops literacy — CRM, marketing automation, UTM hygiene, and lead scoring.
  • Experiment discipline — hypotheses, tests, and the patience to compound small wins.
  • Sales partnership — fluent in pipeline language and at ease being measured on revenue, not form fills.

How the role is measured (KPIs)

A demand gen role lives and dies by pipeline created and pipeline-to-revenue conversion, blended and paid CAC, stage-by-stage conversion rates, and the lead-to-MQL quality rate that keeps sales from drowning in junk. The metrics and KPIs guide is the full scorecard a hiring manager should expect the role to own.

Demand generation manager vs marketing manager, lead, and director

The same discipline carries different titles by scope:

  • Demand generation marketing manager — executes the plan on one or two channels; the title closest to an individual contributor.
  • Demand generation manager — owns the full funnel and the budget for a product or segment.
  • Demand generation lead — sets strategy and coordinates specialists (paid, content, ops) without necessarily managing them.
  • Director / VP of demand generation — owns the number across the org, hires the team, and answers for pipeline at the board level.

It is the same system at every level; what changes is span of control and how far back from the tactics you stand. A director sets the strategy; a marketing manager ships the campaigns inside it.

A sample demand generation job description

A template to adapt, whether you are hiring for the role or applying to it:

We are hiring a demand generation manager to own the pipeline our marketing creates. You will plan and run full-funnel programs across content, paid, and lifecycle; build the conversion paths that turn interest into qualified leads; instrument measurement so every dollar ties to pipeline; and partner with sales on a handoff both teams trust. You will be measured on pipeline created and CAC, not activity. You bring three or more years in B2B demand generation, fluency with marketing automation and a CRM, and the analytical chops to find the one stage worth fixing first.

Whether you are writing this to hire or reading it to apply, the fastest way to understand the role is to model the funnel it owns.
